Great Bustard chicks hatch

June 15, 2009 by wosuser

For the first time since 1832, Great Bustards have bred in Wiltshire. At least two of the females from the reintroduction scheme on Salisbury Plain have been seen with chicks which hatched around 31st May. The Great Bustard Group is delighted with this success. For more details and some video footage, visit the Great Bustard website: www.greatbustard.com.

Please note that for security reasons, the location is being kept secret.

Breeding Gull Survey – thanks

June 14, 2009 by wosuser

The Breeding Gull Survey 2009 in Wiltshire has now been completed.

Many thanks to those of you who submitted records of gulls on roofs to help direct this survey. (There is no longer a need to provide records urgently to Rob — please revert to submitting observations in the normal way).

As suspected, there has been a large increase since the survey undertaken for Birds of Wiltshire. Provisional results from Peter Rock, who conducted the 2009 fieldwork, suggest well over 1,000 pairs. A full report of the survey will be published in Hobby in due course and the data will, of course, feature in the maps in the Wiltshire Tetrad Atlas.
