WOS wins a grant from OPAL
June 23, 2010 by wosuser
WOS has been successful in its bid for a grant from OPAL – the Open Air Laboratories Network. We are to receive £2,800, of which part will be used to fund bird ID charts for the new hide in the extended Langford Lakes Nature Reserve; and part will be used to stage two public events at the reserve where we hope to encourage children and adults to take up birdwatching and maybe become WOS members. We will be using some of the money to buy binoculars and a birdsong recorder for use at these events.
OPAL is a partnership between the Natural History Museum, the Field Studies Council, the National Biodiversity Network, the Met Office and a number of British universities, and is headed by Imperial College, London. Their aim is “to create and inspire a new generation of nature lovers by getting people to explore, study, enjoy and protect their local environment.” OPAL received £11.75 million from the Big Lottery Fund in 2007, and they are allocating grants to wildlife and natural history groups around the country.
