Work Party on Cleveland Scrapes
November 14, 2011 by wosuser
Title: Work Party on Cleveland Scrapes
Location: Cleveland Scrapes (Lake 74)
Description: Views onto the recently-created Cleveland Scrapes (Lake 74) are becoming increasingly encroached by the growth of vegetation upon the scrapes as well as at Twitcher’s Gate. Several local birders have asked if this situation can be remedied. On Sunday 11th December, the CWPT’s Volunteer Rangers will be on Cleveland Scrapes to clear vegetation growth along the shoreline visible from Twitcher’s Gate. This work will improve views onto the scrape and will improve the current situation. We also plan to do some work at Twitcher’s Gate too, if we can involve sufficient people to create 2 teams.
We’d like to invite local birders to support this work and come and help. The more people who help, the more we can improve views onto the scrapes. You’ll also get to see the scrapes and lagoons in situ and see why they are able to attract the numbers of species that they do!
Clearly this is a temporary situation and a temporary fix until we can develop more permanent solutions. But the success of this will depend upon how many people may support this work.
If you’d like to support this work, please let me know so that we can plan teams and provide sufficient tools etc.
We will be meeting at the Ranger Compound, adjacent to Twitcher’s Gate (north shore of Lake 74, off Cerney Wick Lane) at 10am. Please bring wellington boots, lunch and refreshments. We’ll provide the mince pies, tools, and gloves.
Please contact Gareth Harris, Biodiversity Manager, Cotswold Water Park Trust 01793 752730 or gareth.harris@waterpark.org

Cornwall Long Weekend
August 28, 2011 by wosuser
Title: Cornwall Long Weekend
Description: This is a repeat of the very successful trips of autumns 2007 and 2009. We will again be based in the Penzance/St Ives/Hayle area which will give us easy access to prime bird watching areas such as the Hayle Estuary, Porthgwarra and St Ives Head. We should see a wide variety of birds depending on weather conditions. Sea watching should reveal shearwaters and skuas, whilst the estuaries and marshes should hold good numbers of wildfowl and waders. There are many small valleys in the area which should provide some interesting passerines with always the chance of a rarity.
Members will need to book their own accommodation in the area, and, as with past long weekend trips, we will aim to meet up in the evening to make the most of the trip. As perhaps not everyone will want to come for all four days, we will have some prearranged meeting places for at least the first two days
The leader will be Granville Pictor (tel 01722 325408, mob 07767731650), and if those planning to go could contact him in good time, he will provide details of the meeting places and other details of the trip
Start Date: 2011-10-06
