Projects
The following conservation and research projects take place in the county:
Wiltshire Tree Sparrow Recovery Project
This project was started in 1999 with the aim of building upon the remnant Tree Sparrow population to provide a viable thriving population. Since then approximately 900 nestboxes have been installed and a small but dedicated team maintain and monitor these nestboxes. Our volunteers replenish feeding stations for Tree Sparrows and monitor numbers using them. The project is one of the largest Tree Sparrow projects in the country with 120 pairs using our nestboxes.
This project has been supported in the past by RSPB, Thames Water and Wiltshire County Council.
Black-headed Gulls
Black-headed Gulls dominate the rafts provided by the Cotswold Water Park Society at CWP74. The nestling gulls are fitted with inscribed colour rings to enable observers to identify the birds in the field. Approximately 1 in 3 of these birds has been resighted in recent years with birds being recorded as far away as Ireland, Spain and Portugal.
